The Villa Maroulas, a traditional accommodation, conveniently situated in the central part of Crete, is the perfect starting point for the discovery of the southern part of the island.

Indeed, it is in the Rethymno area that you will find one of the easiest and most beautiful access to the yet-unexplored part of the province.

In the valley situated between the two main mountain ranges, Psiloritis and White Mountains, you will find the road leading to one of the wildest part of Crete.

This road, going north to south, will take you through the central landscapes of the island. After the impressive Kourtaliotikou and Kotsifou gorges, you will discover after a turn the immensity of the Lybian Sea.

Through a massive downhill path on foot, you will access to the Preveli palm trees beach, a small paradise where a river, coming from the mountains, plunges into the sea.

A few kilometers west, standing out on the deep blue sea, the Monastery of Preveli will amaze you with its white and ochre buildings.

The traditional fishermen village of Plakias and its long sandy beach offer you a vast amount of tavernas where you can taste delicious grilled sea breams while facing the sea. In this small family-sized seaside resort, you can also go shopping easily.

Through a wonderful road going high up above sea level, you will reach the traditional villages of Myrthios and Sellia. Time seems to have stopped in these ancient villages with narrow streets.

Following the breathtaking coastal road, its rocky and wild sceneries and the deep blue sea, you will enjoy a gripping world of contrasts.

Close to a wonderful protected beach, stands the fortress of Fragokastello, reminding us of the tormented history of the island where its inhabitants had to resist to centuries of oppression to save their identity.

The inhabitants of Sfakia, the Sfakiotes, are known for their tough and proud personality and keep the values of the traditional Cretans alive: hospitality and honor. Their village, a small fishermen village with its white alleyways is also the starting point for the boats which go to other far- south coastal traditional villages.

To go back to the north coast, you will take the winding mountain road that follows the Imbros gorge up to the Askifou plateau.
