At a 30 min drive from the villa Maroulas, after the Monastery of Arkadi, is situated the traditional village of Margarites. The village, one of the nicest in Crete, is an important center of ceramic art. Many shops and workshops there propose all kind of handmade potteries from beautiful to more simple and functional. The most famous items produced there are the big jars, the “pithoi”, already used by the Minoans. All decorated with modern or old patterns. You can see the potters molding objects using very ancient techniques and firing them in ovens. If you wish, you can mold some yourself or take pottery lessons in one of the workshops. Many potteries we have in Villa Maroulas come from there.
Surrounded by lovely scenery, Margarites is also known for the remains of beautiful Venetian villas and houses. Some of them have been restored in a historic way and are dedicated to luxury holidays rental. Walking in the small alleys of the village, you will see a few remarkable byzantine churches as well as doors and walls dating from the Venetian era. And, on the main place, is located a nice small taverna where you will enjoy wonderful stuffed zucchini flower or a Greek coffee in front of the breath taking view on the valley and the sea. Margarites is one of the place you really should not miss during your holidays in Crete.
